This was the best shot that I could capture of the Queen Mary 2 when she was docked in the Firth of Forth a couple of years ago. I heard on the radio on the way to Glasgow that she was arriving and rushed back through to try and see her in the evening.

Parking in North Queensferry was the expected nightmare and I ran (no mean feat!) to the base of the rail bridge, climbed walls, took skin off fingers, bruised legs (obviously not 21 anymore!! LOL). As she came into sight I could see she was turning and preparing to depart, so I was limited in what could be achieved. I have seen shots, possibly taken from the yacht in this picture, which were simply awesome... there will always be the next time.

Still the experience of getting this shot was obviously memorable and the fact you have the yacht in the shot gives a real sense of scale to it. Not sure if I was in the yacht I would be taking pictures, getting out the way would be my priority…

Funnily enough I had a similar experience when the Ark Royal left Rosyth. Hammered up the M90 (definitely no mean feat in a 20+ year old diesesal Land Rover!) and sprinted from the 'vehicle convoy layby' up to Forth Road Bridge only to find that they'd sailed early so I only got very distant photos of the stern as she disappeared.

So much for the famous Royal Navy's impecable timekeeping! Maybe they reckoned I (or others) was in the pay of the Ruskies...
